Jason is an award-winning journalist whose writing career dates back to when he developed the ability to use a crayon. He, most notably, worked previously as a "professional fan," as he likes to call it, at CinemaBlend, for which he wrote about anything and everything under the pop culture umbrella... especially Batman. His passion for the art of cinema began even earlier, stemming from repeat viewings of The Wizard of Oz.
This initially led him to pursue a career in filmmaking -- and even work briefly in the industry as an extra in the straight-to-video family film, Alice Upside Down -- before deciding that his talents would be better served discussing and showing appreciation for the various forms of entertainment he is passionate about.
Despite his elusiveness, Gotham City has never had trouble getting in touch with Batman, thanks to the Bat-Signal. However, the DC hero has unveiled a method of seeking out his help.
In Batman #10, The Dark Knight unveils the new and improved Bat-Signal 2.0, which is a luminous sight to see.
Image via DC ComicsThe superhero's original Bat-Signal was a single machine that projects his instantly recognizable symbol into the sky from the rooftop of the Gotham City Police Department. However, as explained in the comic, the new model consists of a grouping of 3,000 autonomous drones that merge into the shape of the logo and light up the sky with yellow LED bulbs emitting 90,000 lumens.
The unveiling of this new beacon is a response to GCPD Commissioner Vandal Savage's crackdown on the vigilante exploits of Batman and his trusted allies as part of an act approved by the city's current mayor, Pamela "Poison Ivy" Isley. This includes imprisoning Barbara Gordon (as seen in her recent spin-off, Barbara Gordon: Breakout) for not giving up the other members of the Bat-Family.
However, to show that Savage's corrupt actions have no real effect on the Caped Crusader, he unleashes a reinvention of the Bat-Signal that shines brighter than any previous iteration of the iconic device. Not only has it certainly attracted the attention of many admiring Gotham citizens, but it also sends Savage a message that his quarrel with Batman is far from over.
The Bat-Signal has been a staple of Batman lore since almost as long as the character has existed. It was invented by one of the character's original co-creators, Bob Kane, along with Jack Schiff, who wrote the story that first introduced the device, Detective Comics #60 (called "Case of the Costume-Clad Killers"), which was published in 1942.
Matt Fraction and Jorge Jiménez's History Of Batman Lore Updates
Image via DCEven without Vandal Savage's war against the Bat-Family to prompt it, the unveiling of the Bat-Signal 2.0 would have been a momentous occasion in any case. In fact, it is only the latest instance of Matt Fraction and Jorge Jiménez reinventing an element of Bruce Wayne's legacy or introducing a new concept or material item altogether in their current run of Batman.
For instance, Savage's first order of business in attacking Batman is destroying the Batcave, as well as every base of operations that he and his allies have managed to hide all around the city. The Batcave also stood as a major staple of the character's history for more than 80 years, following its debut in 1943.
Batman also saw Tim Drake give up his position as Robin in the sixth issue, giving Bruce's son, Damian Wayne, the chance to be the official Robin for this interpretation of the DC comic. Additionally, Bruce Wayne's longtime live-in servant and adoptive father, Alfred Pennyworth, is no longer living in this timeline, leaving Bats to converse with an AI duplicate of the character instead.
However, it was more recently revealed that Wayne is receiving a new butler who is set to debut in Issue #12. Only images of the character, a younger woman of unknown name and origin, have been revealed so far.
The series has also introduced new characters to add to Batman's rogues' gallery, which is also set to expand further in the upcoming twelfth issue. A variant cover, showing the Caped Crusader on a life-sized chessboard surrounded by statues of his latest assortment of enemies, has some fans calling these new villains Batman's equivalent to Spider-Man's Sinister Six.
Batman, which debuted in Sept. 2025, is written by the aforementioned Matt Fraction, who has quickly become one of the most acclaimed authors to bring Gotham City to life with this new series. The book has also increased the notoriety of Spanish artist Jorge Jiménez, who got his start drawing for digital comics based on hit DC-inspired TV shows Smallville and Arrow.
Batman #10 is now available in comic book stores and on most digital reading platforms.
