DC Comics' classic Superboy is taking on a whole new look, even if his custom suit of armor still leaves him wildly outmatched against his latest enemy.
Action Comics #1099 (by Mark Waid, Skylar Partridge, Petricio Delpeche, Ivan Plascencia, and Steve Wands) brings readers back to the 1990s, where a young Clark Kent is still adjusting to the recent loss of his powers at the hands of the villainous time-traveler known as Epoch. While Epoch's latest assault was more than enough to catch Clark's allies off guard, Superboy himself is more than ready to jump back into action thanks to his very own suit of armor.

The official solicit synopsis for Action Comics #1099 from DC Comics reads, "BLAST FROM THE PAST! After defeating Xotar, Superboy and the Justice League turn their attention to another mystery unsolved. The rocket ship that brought Clark to Earth has been activated. Could this be the key to finding Superman?"
Action Comics is just one of several titles swept up in DC Comics' Reign of the Superboys storyline, which itself was spun out of the events of DC K.O.. Following Superman's defeat of Darkseid, the Man of Steel used all the Omega Energy he had amassed to bring back those who lost their lives during the course of the tournament itself, leading to his own sudden disappearance in the process.
Superboy Is Reclaiming His Relevancy In DC Comics
Reign of the Superboys has seen multiple characters step up to try and fill in the void left by Superman's absence, including Conner Kent, Jon Kent, Kara Zor-El, Superboy-Prime, and even David Sikela's Boy Thunder. Most importantly, however, is Clark Kent, specifically the younger version of the character who has been visited by a trio consisting of Booster Gold, Mary Marvel, and the Martian Manhunter.
In the wake of Superman's disappearance, Booster Gold took it upon himself to do whatever it took to find the Man of Steel wherever he might be in space or time. Unsurprisingly, this led him and his fellow Justice Leaguers to the 1990s, although they never expected to end up fighting alongside the teenage version of their future ally. Unable to explain the situation to the young Superboy, the three decided to stay with him in the hopes of protecting the future Superman from Epoch, who they believed would target him in his youth.
Just as Booster Gold and the others worried, that is precisely what happened. Rather than merely trying to kill Superboy outright, however, Epoch has targeted the very ship that brought an infant Kal-El to Earth so many years ago, only to inadvertently strip Superboy of his Kryptonian powers during their last confrontation in the pages of Action Comics #1098.
