Elvira Reveals the Untold Chapters of Her Life in a Unique Memoir Retelling

Elvira's Life Story Gets Graphic

In 2021, Cassandra Peterson celebrated 40 scintillating and spooky years of her best-known character, Elvira, by bearing it all in her memoir, Yours Cruelly, Elvira: Memoirs of the Mistress of the Dark. The best-selling book traced her rise to fame in show business and revealed a few previously unknown details about the real her.

It covers the events leading to her life-changing deal delivering colorful commentary about schlocky thrillers on Elvira's Movie Macabre. The syndicated TV program would spawn a pair of movies, namely 1988's cult favorite horror-comedy Elvira: Mistress of the Dark and Elvira's Haunted Hills from 2001.

The book is also noted as Peterson's way of coming out as pansexual, which is just one of a few reasons why Elvira: Mistress of the Dark qualifies as a queer horror movie classic. In it, she reveals her same-sex relationship with her longtime partner, Teresa Wierson.

Yours Cruelly: Becoming Elvira essentially serves as the graphic novel adaptation of said memoir, for which Peterson teams up with frequent collaborator, writer David Avallone, who is also known as the co-creator of Image Comics' Drawing Blood. The 160-page comic is illustrated by Mariano Benitez-Chapo, who is certainly no stranger to horror comic books, having also contributed to Vampirella and Zenescope's Van Helsing series, for instance.

Yours Cruelly Is Only Elvira's Latest Comic Book Appearance

Few celebrities are better qualified to have their life story depicted in the form of a graphic novel than Cassandra Peterson. Reason being, she has already made herself a seasoned veteran of the comic book medium with numerous appearances as Elvira.

Even before she made her big screen debut in Elvira: Mistress of the Dark, the B-movie busting queen transitioned her hosting duties to comics with the horror anthology comic book series Elvira's House of Mystery, putting her in the same league as Tales from the Crypt's Cryptkeeper. DC Comics published the series from 1986 to 1987, during which it also put out the Christmas special Elvira's Haunted Holidays.

The following decade, Elvira became the official star of the fittingly named Claypool Comics series, Elvira: Mistress of the Dark, which followed her on her own spooky adventures for 166 issues. It was revived in 2019 as an ongoing narrative by Dynamite Entertainment, which would continue to publish graphic stories involving the character, including when she crossed paths with a legendary Scream King in Elvira Meets Vincent Price, which is also one of many projects of the like penned by the aforementioned David Avallone.

Peterson first contributed to one of her character's own comic book stories by teaming up with Avallone and artist Dave Acosta for Elvira: The Omega Ma'am, in which she wakes up from a hairspray-induced coma into a post-apocalyptic world. More recently, she joined forces with another beloved expert on all things eerie and uncanny in the six-issue crossover series, Harley Quinn x Elvira, in which the reformed Clown Princess of Crime enlists Elvira to help plan the ultimate Halloween party, leading to a series of ghoulish misadventures.
