Forgotten Spider-Man Hero Confirmed For Major Marvel Return

Marvel has been on a roll with their Spider-Man franchise as of late. Spider-Man is currently enjoying a golden age, but what about one of the more forgotten Spider-Man characters that deserves a little more attention?

May "Mayday" Parker — a.k.a. The Spectacular Spider-Girl — is a fan-favorite from the 2000s who has largely gone under the radar since her solo comic ended in 2010. With fans of the character growing anxious due to the lack of Mayday, it may not be too terribly long before they can see the daughter of Peter Parker back in their comic pages.

When Could Fans Expect To See Spider-Girl Return?

Marvel Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski answered a few questions during Singapore's Marvel Makan Masterworks event this past December, and one Spider-Girl fan made it a point to get some answers about their favorite hero. Decked out in Spider-Girl cosplay, the fan asked if Marvel had forgotten about May "Mayday" Parker and her version of Spider-Girl. “There’ll be more Spider-Girl. Mayday is near and dear to our hearts. We’ve got more with Tom DeFalco and the Spider-Verse coming your way,” Cebulski answered.

Tom DeFalco, of course, is the creator of Spider-Girl, so the idea of new Mayday stories from her creator is a very exciting prospect indeed. DeFalco, who once served as Marvel's Editor-in-Chief, penned almost every issue of Spider-Girl from 1998 to 2006, and just about every solo adventure Mayday has gone on since her debut. Unfortunately, no further news regarding Mayday has dropped since Cebulski's comments in December, and Marvel has yet to solicit any new Spider-Girl projects.

All hope, however, is not lost — Mayday isn't completely out of the public's eye. The future Spider-Girl made her big-screen debut in Spider-Man: Across the Universe as Peter B. Parker and Mary Jane Watson's little girl. She even got her own cute Spider-Man hat that fit to look like a mask and displayed some very impressive Spidey-style acrobatics of her own. If it's true that Tom DeFalco is working on new Spider-Girl material starring Mayday Parker, there's a very good chance fans will see some synergy when it comes time for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse to release in 2027.

Who Is Mayday Parker?

Before Miles Morales stepped into Spider-Man's shoes, or Spider-Gwen rose to popularity, May "Mayday" Parker hit the scene as the de facto Spider-Man protégé. Daughter of Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson, she exhibited extraordinary skills much like those of her father. Originally appearing in What If...? #105, Mayday was introduced as a non-canon Spider-Man proxy for fans to enjoy.

However, a wildly enthusiastic response from fans simply wouldn't let the introduction of such a fun new character go unnoticed. This led to Spider-Girl getting her very own ongoing series, The Spectacular Spider-Girl, spearheaded by creator Tom DeFalco, that lasted from 1998 to 2006. That's not to say Spider-Girl didn't face an uphill battle a lot of the time. On more than one occasion, the book was saved from cancellation by grassroots fan campaigns. It's possible this is the reason this version of Spider-Girl hasn't been as relevant in modern comics — but her fans haven't forgotten, and don't seem to be willing to any time soon.

With no major presence in the modern Marvel Universe, Spider-Girl is more than due for a return to the spotlight. The character hasn't appeared in anything more than a few digital comics and cameos since her standalone series ended in 2010. In 2023's Spider-Boy #12, a new Spider-Girl named Maka Akana appeared and is currently seen as Marvel's official Spider-Girl. However, as the Spider-Verse films have proven countless times, it's a vast universe in the Marvel Comics continuity, and there is always room for the original Spider-Girl to make a comeback.

DeFalco's Spider-Girl stories have not yet been confirmed by Marvel Comics.
