Dark Horse Comics has officially unveiled the next Hellboy limited series — Hellboy in Hell: Nothing but Blood. This two-issue series from creator and writer Mike Mignola, artist and letterer Cyrille Pomès, and colorist Dave Stewart will bring Hellboy back to the early days of his trek through Hell itself, all for a heartfelt story that fans are sure to adore.

The official solicit synopsis for Hellboy in Hell: Nothing but Blood #1 from Dark Horse Comics reads simply, "Hellboy sets out to rescue a young woman during the middle of a demonic uprising." Although this doesn't give readers much to go on when it comes to what they can expect from the story at the heart of Hellboy in Hell: Nothing but Blood, it does tell them everything they need to know about the upcoming limited series' setting.

Specifically, Hellboy in Hell: Nothing but Blood takes place after the events of Hellboy in Hell #8, originally released back in 2015. The classic issue, subtitled "The Hounds of Pluto," revolved around a supernatural trial in Hell, as well as Hellboy's search for a disease that threatened to reduce him to one of the nameless phantoms that haunt the darkest corners of the afterlife.

What's Been Said About Hellboy's New Era So Far?

"Yes, I too thought Hellboy in Hell was a closed book — but a while back I discovered the work of Cyrille Pomés and instantly fell in love with it," franchise creator and series writer Mike Mignola explained. "We actually met, and when he said he’d like to do a Hellboy story, well, how could I say no to that? I still had half an idea for a Hell story rattling around in my head and invited him to flesh that out, so now what you have is a true collaboration on the story and his absolutely wonderful art and storytelling."

Hellboy in Hell: Nothing but Blood artist Cyrille Pomès noted that it was Mignola who "was the artist whose early work had such a profound impact on me as a teenager, and whose evolution I’ve followed with awe ever since." Pomès went on to recall asking Mignola to write a Hellboy series for him to illustrate, stating, "His response still resonates with me today: 'It would be an honor.'"

While the original Hellboy series came to a close after 57 issues, Hellboy in Hell offered readers another ten chapters through which they could follow their favorite demon's journey through the afterlife. Hellboy in Hell also marked Mignola's return to both writing and illustration duties on the series, which marked a major high point for fans.

Hellboy in Hell: Nothing but Blood #1 from Dark Horse Comics goes on sale on Oct. 7.
