Ryan Smith is located just south of Boston and is a lifelong fan of movies, comics, music and all things pop culture... and pro wrestling, but don't hold that against him.

Marvel's Age of Comics rolls on — this time covering what is perhaps the most important origin story in modern comics. Comic readers got the full treatment with Wolverine: Weapon X back in the 1990s, and this summer, Jim Rugg will be revisiting the origin of an icon.

Wolverine is one of the most prolific comic book characters of all time — but his story is also one of the most tragic tales ever told. Continuing Marvel's Age of Comics series, Wolverine: Weapon X takes a deep dive into yet another defining story — this time spotlighting a tale that not only defined a hero — but an entire generation of comics. Wolverine: Weapon X is the quintessential story to really understand possibly the most important X-Man.

Wolverine: Weapon X Deep Dives Into the Iconic Story That Made Wolverine the Character He Is Today

Nearly two decades after Wolverine's first appearance, Barry Windsor-Smith delivered a pivotal story for the character that would end up reshaping how any writer viewed him from that point forward. Windsor-Smith expertly wrote and illustrated Wolverine: Weapon X in Marvel Comics Presents issues #72 to #84. It's both a tragic and horrifying story following Wolverine's transformation into the nearly-unkillable machine that most readers think of him as. While the concept of Wolverine was always great — a mutant with metal claws who can go toe-to-toe with specimens like the Hulk — Windsor-Smith's examination of what made him that way has since gone down as one of the legendary comic stories.

Never has there ever been a Wolverine story — or, perhaps, any story — more colorfully vibrant when telling such a somber story. Barry Windsor-Smith's artwork is visceral — combining color and pencils in a way rarely matched. Windsor-Smith is redefining what a comic artist can do with the way he uses anatomy to tell a story. Logan is placed in the most precarious position during Wolverine: Weapon X — in no small part due to the abhorrent, mysterious Professor, who oversaw the entire excruciating procedure. Seeing the majority of the story through the eyes of the Weapon X doctors adds an entirely new dimension to the story and works to dehumanize Logan even more — which is a choice that makes Logan's eventual escape all the more satisfying.

Jim Rugg Does A Fantastic Job Of Setting the Table By Revisiting Wolverine's Past

Jim Rugg is a cartoonist and illustrator from Pittsburgh and has been a staple in the comics world for years. There are very few people more qualified to tackle the history of Wolverine, and this particular edition of Age of Comics proves that without a shadow of a doubt. Rugg grants the reader all the context necessary for fully understanding Wolverine, what he was before the story, and what this story in particular made him. Rugg takes us through Wolverine's original appearances and focuses on the year before Weapon X was released, before delving into Weapon X. For those who had not followed Wolverine's journey leading up to the issues of Marvel Comics Presents that make up Wolverine: Weapon X, Rugg has them covered. Age of Comics is always a great history lesson for those looking to learn more about Marvel, and Rugg's entry is no different.
