New Smile and A Quiet Place Sequels Confirmed as Franchises Prepare for Comebacks

IDW Dark is officially giving Smile and A Quiet Place another round of sequels, and they both sound absolutely horrifying.

In a recent press release, IDW Publishing imprint IDW Dark gave fans their first look at the next follow-ups to two of the hottest horror properties. First up is another Smile sequel, Any Given Smile, written by the groundbreaking Eisner Award-nominated Stephanie Williams and illustrated by Pablo Collar with colors by Triona Farrell and letters by Ariana Maher. Any Given Smile brings one of Hollywood's deadliest demons to a whole new arena (literally) across five pulse-pounding issues.

The official solicit synopsis for Any Given Smile #1 from IDW Dark reads, "The year is 1995, and all eyes are on the American Arena League football championship game. The Sharks gear up for the most significant event in the AAL's 20-year history, and their sudden-star backup quarterback is feeling the pressure from his teammates, his fans, and his debts to the city’s gambling underworld."

The solicit text continues, "A string of suicides hits the community hard, drawing a suspicious sports journalist deeper into that world to examine their connection to the big game. No one can trust anything or anyone as a mind-bending and mysterious Smile Entity and its horrifying visions threaten their payouts, their sanity, and their lives…"

Writer Stephanie Williams opened up about the sheer scale of the potential horror at hand in Any Given Smile, which was also explored in Smile 2 back in 2024. "It is really scary because [the Smile Entity] wants everyone to smile," Williams noted. "So if you happen to find a host that will be on a big stage, what does that look like?"

Any Given Smile will mark the second comic book set in the world of the hit horror series from IDW Publishing, with the first being Smile for the Camera by Hannah Rose May, Dearbhla Kelly, and Brian Kolek. Smile for the Camera takes place long before the events of the original film and begins by following aspiring model Cami, whose own encounter with the Smile Entity kicks off a truly horrifying series of events from which there is simply no escape.

IDW Dark also unveiled A Quiet Place: Rising Tides, a five-issue thriller by writer Declan Shalvey, artist Luke Sparrow, colorist Colin Craker, and letterer Jodie Troutman. A Quiet Place: Rising Tides features Grace, a young woman who took it upon herself to track down her estranged father in the Florida Keys, unwittingly doing so just before the world as she knew it was coming to a gruesome end.

As noted by the official solicit synopsis for A Quiet Place: Rising Tides #1, Grace's journey to find her father is successful, though it doesn't lead to anything remotely resembling the closure she was hoping she would discover along with him. "Now stranded in the aftermath of the invasion that shattered civilization, she and her sick, aging father cling to survival on the open water – the only space safe from the creatures who attack at the sound of a single breath," the solicit text reads. "But his oxygen is running low, supplies are disappearing quickly, and the deadly predators circling the shoreline are learning fast. And on the horizon, a hurricane is coming."
