Jason is an award-winning journalist whose writing career dates back to when he developed the ability to use a crayon. He, most notably, worked previously as a "professional fan," as he likes to call it, at CinemaBlend, for which he wrote about anything and everything under the pop culture umbrella... especially Batman. His passion for the art of cinema began even earlier, stemming from repeat viewings of The Wizard of Oz.
This initially led him to pursue a career in filmmaking -- and even work briefly in the industry as an extra in the straight-to-video family film, Alice Upside Down -- before deciding that his talents would be better served discussing and showing appreciation for the various forms of entertainment he is passionate about.

Every person who grew up with the Power Rangers has a favorite character. Many youngsters idolized the Green Ranger, Tommy Oliver, whose iconography continues to endure as the franchise expands to this day.

The latest sign of the Green Ranger's lasting influence is a new illustration designed as a tribute to the late Tommy actor, Jason David Frank. The image serves as a variant cover for the upcoming comic book Power Rangers: Green #1.

The alternative cover art for the first issue of Power Rangers: Green sees an older, emerald-cloaked Tommy strolling through a field, accompanied by a blue-haired child, with the remains of a MegaZord — the Voltron-esque machines the Rangers used to fight more gargantuan enemies — behind him. In the foreground, there is his original Mighty Morphin-era uniform hanging from a clothes line and a helmet perched on a post, and a caption that reads, "In memory of Jason David Frank."

Frank, whose real-life martial arts skills played a key role in his acting career, especially in the Power Rangers franchise, tragically passed away on Nov. 19, 2022, by suicide. The 49-year-old is survived by his wife, Tammie, and his four children, and has a posthumous role in the upcoming superhero movie, Legend of the White Dragon, which will release on Aug. 28, 2026, which also happens to be Power Rangers Day.

The Power Rangers: Green #1 variant cover comes from the award-winning Juni Ba, whose distinctive style works perfectly for the Frank tribute. The artist has also lent his talents to the likes of DC's Black Label release of The Boy Wonder from 2024 and his Image comic, Monkey Meat.

The story of Power Rangers: Green sees an older Tommy Oliver living a peaceful existence in a dystopian future that is interrupted when extraneous circumstances force him to rediscover his heroic roots. Paul Allor, who has penned other Power Rangers titles through Boom! Studios wrote the comic, which is illustrated by Gustaffo Vargas of Nullhunter fame.

There may not be a more iconic character in the three-decade-plus history of the Power Rangers franchise than Tommy Oliver. When he was first introduced on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers in 1993, he was only intended to appear for fourteen episodes, tracing the Green Ranger's transition from Rita Repulsa's enchanted lackey to a full-fledged member of the team.

However, after proving to be more popular than expected, Tommy made a grand return in the phenomenal series' second season. Not only did he receive a new look as the White Ranger, but he was promoted to leader of the Power Rangers, officially proving to have redeemed his past misdeeds.

Unlike many other characters, Tommy's legacy would not end with the Mighty Morphin era. The franchise continued in 1996 with the debut of Power Rangers Zeo, in which Tommy became the Red Ranger, a role he retained when the series shifted into "turbo" in 1997's Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie.

Despite supposedly giving up his Ranger status during the Power Rangers: Turbo series, Tommy would return as the Red Zeo Ranger for a special episode of Power Rangers Wild Force, later reemerged as the Black Ranger on Power Rangers Dino Thunder before Frank ultimately retired from the franchise and declined from appearing in Netflix's 2023 special, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always, which is dedicated to his memory. His and Tommy's legacy continues in Power Rangers comics, including the upcoming Green series.

Power Rangers: Green #1 hits the shelves on Aug. 5.
