The Saw franchise is expanding again with a new video game that pushes its story further into the past. Titled Saw: Genesis, the project takes the long-running horror series back to the years after World War I, well before the rise of John “Jigsaw” Kramer.
SAW: Genesis | Reveal Trailer | 3v1 Multiplayer Horror Game
The original Saw film debuted in 2004 and introduced audiences to a killer who traps victims in brutal tests meant to force moral choices. The franchise has since grown into ten films, along with books, games, and live experiences. Now, developers are adding a new layer to the story by suggesting Jigsaw may not have been the first to use this method.
In Saw: Genesis, players face a new figure known as the Judge. This character creates deadly traps similar to those seen in the films, targeting victims that include World War I soldiers. The setup implies that the Judge’s actions may have influenced Jigsaw’s later crimes, a connection the films have not confirmed.
The game uses a three versus one multiplayer format. One player controls the Judge, while three others play as victims trying to escape. According to the game’s official description, players must work together to solve challenges, gather items, and unlock paths before time runs out. Each match takes place on a shifting map, which forces players to adjust quickly as conditions change. The Judge, unlike many villains in similar games, can be overpowered physically, which puts more focus on strategy than brute force.
The trailer features a voice that appears to be Jigsaw, praising the Judge and calling him a prophet. The line suggests a deeper connection between the two characters, though it is not clear if this storyline will become official canon for the franchise.

Saw: Genesis is being developed by Bloober Team, a studio known for horror titles such as Blair Witch, The Medium, Layers of Fear, and the 2024 remake of Silent Hill 2. The studio’s track record points to a strong focus on psychological horror, which aligns with the tone fans expect from the Saw brand.
No release date has been announced. Players can currently wishlist the game and sign up for a closed alpha test to try early versions.
On the film side, franchise co-creator James Wan has stated he will remain involved in future Saw projects. That signals continued investment in the brand as it grows across different media, even as Hollywood faces pressure to deliver reliable returns from established properties.
