Supergirl's Nightwing-Inspired Redesign In Supergirl: Survive Officially Revealed

Like any comic book hero can say, Supergirl has undergone many changes to her look over the years. Even Milly Alcock's outfit in the character's self-titled, upcoming movie boasts a design that is similar to her 1959 DC Comics debut, but still very much its own.

The version of Kara Zor-El introduced in the miniseries Supergirl: Survive has a new costume unlike anything comic book readers have ever seen... on her, at least. However, it might remind some readers of one of Batman's most trusted allies.

Supergirl: Survive Debuts Kara's Nightwing Costume

DC Comics is already building anticipation for the fourth issue of its new Elseworlds story, Supergirl: Survive. The publisher put out a variant cover by renowned artist Taurin Clarke that sees the title hero dressed like someone from a different corner of the DC Universe, Nightwing.

The image shows Kara Zor-El floating above a blanket of clouds, beaming a smile almost brighter than the yellow sun that makes her ability to fly possible. Instead of the typical red and blue outfit that she and her cousin, Superman, have been known to wear, the Kryptonian is donning a black and blue getup, the former serving as the predominant color while the latter makes up the minimalist, bird-like logo.

This costume bears an unmistakable resemblance to the modern design worn by Dick Grayson in his current, post-Robin vigilante identity, Nightwing. Kara wore a similarly designed zip-up hoodie in the first issue of her new limited series, but it appears that Supergirl: Survive #4 will mark the debut of a full-fledged costume that is unique to everything the character has previously worn in comics or elsewhere.

The makeover could lay the groundwork for this iteration of Kara embracing the Nightwing moniker instead of going by Supergirl. This may sound like a wild character reinvention, but it is actually more on-brand for a native of Krypton than some may realize.

Nightwing's Moniker Is of Kryptonian Origin

As fans of Dick Grayson's career after deciding to wage his own war on crime outside of Gotham City should recall, Superman is the one who gave him the name Nightwing. In fact, the title is synonymous with a hero of mythological Kryptonian legend who was created by the god Rao to fight more insidious shadow creatures like him.

It is probably safe to assume that Kara Zor-El has heard of this bedtime story, and perhaps even views it as a source of inspiration to embrace her responsibilities as a hero. That could also very likely be the case with her Nightwing-esque costume debut in Supergirl: Survive #4.

Supergirl: Survive takes place in an alternate reality in which, in the event of Krypton's destruction, teenage Kara Zor-El flees her home with her recently born cousin, Kal-El, in the same escape pod, and struggles to keep the helpless infant alive. Its June 2026 launch is part of a series of titles released as part of a celebration of the Woman of Tomorrow called the Summer of Supergirl, which includes a fitting title one-shot called Summer of Supergirl Special #1, featuring Lobo, who also appears in the DCU Supergirl movie, arriving in theaters Friday.

The limited series is written by Ethan S. Parker, who is best known for his acclaimed Image Comics horror series, Kill Your Darlings, but also wrote a recent edition of Marvel Zombies. Brazilian artist Rod Reis, a veteran of both Supergirl and Superman comics as well as Marvel titles like Moon Knight and various Star Wars series, serves as both penciler and colorist.

Supergirl: Survive #4 hits the shelves on Sept. 2, 2026.
