The following contains major spoilers for Bishop #1, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Marvel Comics just introduced a futuristic mash-up of two iconic X-Men villains, and she is quickly proving to be more than Bishop can handle.

With the mutant nation of Krakoa no more, the titular hero of Bishop #1 (by Saladin Ahmed, Mario Santoro, Federico Blee, and VC's Travis Lanham) returns to his old, or rather, future stomping grounds of Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn in search of another home. Unfortunately, trouble has come looking for Bishop in the form of Flamequake, a new villain from the hero's own future who just so happens to wield the powers of both of her infamous ancestors, Avalanche and Pyro.

The official solicit synopsis for Bishop #1 from Marvel Comics reads, "Bishop has always lived by a strict code. But that code will get called into question when his sister, Shard, is sent to the present right before she died! Will Bishop adhere to his principles and protect the timestream? Or will he risk it all to save the most important person in his life?"

Who are Avalanche and Pyro in X-Men Comics?

Dominikos Petrakis and St. John Allerdyce, better known as Avalanche and Pyro, are by far two of the best-known members of Mystique's Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Introduced in the pages of X-Men #141 by Chris Claremont and John Byrne back in 1980, Avalanche and Pyro were part of the team Mystique put together in her attempt to assassinate Senator Robert Kelly, an event which inadvertently led to the existence of the Days of Future Past timeline that Bishop calls home.

In the years since, Avalanche and Pyro have gone on to become indelible parts of the wider X-Men mythos. Not only did the duo go from being part of Mystique's Brotherhood of Evil Mutants to joining in her government-sanctioned Freedom Force, but they have each gone on to join the rosters of genuinely heroic mutant teams such as S.W.O.R.D. and X-Factor.

As terrifying as it might be for Bishop to face off against a murderous mutant wielding the seismographic and pyrokinetic abilities of Avalanche and Pyro simultaneously, he isn't alone in this particular battle. Not long after the arrival of Flamequake, Bishop's own sister, Shard, made her way into the middle of the fray. While this comes as a major relief for Bishop, it also comes as a fairly massive shock because Shard was last seen being ushered away from her eventual killers during the time-bending events of 2024's Timeslide #1.

Bishop #1 from Marvel Comics is on sale now.
