The Amazing Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield confirms the future of the fan-favorite feature film franchise.

Per ScreenRant, Garfield recently discussed the future of the Amazing Spider-Man film series, specifically responding to a question regarding the status of The Amazing Spider-Man 3. "It's not happening and I don't believe it ever will, but sweet of you to want it to happen," Garfield stated, confirming that the third film initially planned for all the way back in 2016 is now officially off the table entirely.

Garfield made his cinematic debut as Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, in 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man. Directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt, Alvin Sargent, and Steve Kloves, The Amazing Spider-Man featured a star-studded cast including Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, Denis Leary as George Stacy, Sally Field as May Parker, Martin Sheen as Ben Parker, and Rhys Ifans as Doctor Curt Connors, better known as the Lizard. Upon its release, The Amazing Spider-Man drew largely positive reviews from critics, all while raking in more than $758 million against a $230 million budget.

In 2014, Garfield returned to the role of Peter Parker for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which introduced Jamie Foxx's Max Dillon, a.k.a Electro, Paul Giamatti's Aleksei Sytsevich, a.k.a the Rhino, and Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn, a.k.a the Green Goblin. While The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was a similar financial success to its predecessor, the film received generally worse reviews overall. Between this and the emergence of Tom Holland's Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, plans for two more Amazing Spider-Man films were effectively shelved. Fortunately, fans of Garfield's Spider-Man were able to see the character once more in 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home.

What It Would Take to Bring Andrew Garfield Back as Spider-Man

Garfield opened up about his personal desire to return to the role of Spider-Man, though not necessarily in the way fans might expect. "I would love to play the character again in some capacity, but I think it would have to be very weird. I think I would want to do something very strange," Garfield said at the time. "I would want to do something very unique, and offbeat, and surprising, kind of like the creative freedom that they have with the animated Spider-Verse movies. I think they’re so great and you can honor the character in so many different ways through the multiverse."

It remains unknown if and when Garfield will don the Spidey suit again.
