The official solicit synopsis for Tomb Raider: Sacred Artifacts from Dark Horse Comics reads, "Adventurer, archaeologist, socialite, survivor, legend. Lara Croft's life is anything but boring! She’s survived a shipwreck, betrayal, ancient traps, prophecies, and paparazzi. When Croft Manor goes up in flames, it forces Lara to take stock of her life and figure out what is important to her. But a confrontation with a mysterious foe who has gotten their hands on a dangerous and familiar artifact launches Lara into a cross-continental journey, doing what she does best: raiding tombs and questing for legendary relics."
Introduced in Core Design and Eidos Interactive's original Tomb Raider video game in 1996, Lara Croft immediately cemented her place in pop culture as the latest and arguably still greatest archeologist-slash-adventurer. Since the first game's release, the Tomb Raider franchise has been expanded upon, reimagined, and remastered across more than two-dozen video game titles, not to mention three feature films, two animated series, and countless comic books, novels, and other pieces of tie-in merchandise. The latest major release came in the form of Netflix's Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft animated series, which is heading into its second and final season.
While the Netflix animated series is about to come to an end, Prime Video is getting closer and closer to the release of its live-action take on Tomb Raider. This new series will see Game of Thrones and X-Men: Apocalypse star Sophie Turner step into the role of Lara Croft, while Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny star Phoebe Waller-Bridge serves as writer, director, and executive producer. Waller-Bridge will also serve as co-showrunner on the live-action Tomb Raider series alongside fellow executive producer Chad Hodge. In a statement released alongside the news of Tomb Raider's development, Waller-Bridge wrote, "I'm so excited to announce the formidable Sophie Turner as our Lara alongside this phenomenal creative team. It's not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving. Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and are all as outrageous, brave, and hilarious as she is. Get your artifacts out... Croft is coming..."
