The hit X-Men '97 animated series gets a major update during New York Comic Con.

Per Variety, the fan-favorite animated series has just been renewed up through Season 3. The news was announced during New York Comic Con to the delight of fans everywhere. In a short trailer shown during an NYCC event, audiences got to see the return of Apocalypse, while the X-Men themselves were left scattered across time without any clear way back to their present.

A continuation of X-Men: The Animated Series, which ran for 76 episodes across five seasons from 1992 to 1997, X-Men '97 premiered in 2024 and quickly won over longtime fans and newcomers alike. The series brought back classic voice actors, including Alison Sealy-Smith, Cal Dodd, Lenore Zann, George Buza, Adrian Hough, and Christopher Britton to reprise their classic roles, all while introducing a whole host of new characters. Season 1 largely revolved around the rise and fall of the mutant nation of Genosha, which was besieged by numerous threats ranging from the likes of Nimrod to the X-Cutioner.

Season 1 of X-Men '97 was met with almost universally rave reviews from both critics and audiences. Currently, Season 1 holds a near-perfect 99% "Certified Fresh" rating via review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, as averaged across more than 80 verified critical reviews. X-Men '97 Season 1 also holds a 91% approval rating via Rotten Tomatoes' user-generated "Popcornmeter," as averaged across more than 1,000 reviews. This isn't even to mention the 18 major industry awards X-Men '97 was nominated for, of which it won seven, including the Harvey Award for Best Adaptation from a Comic Book or Graphic Novel.

X-Men '97 voice star Ross Marquand was asked if he could offer any insight into what Season 2 has in store for fans. Marquand noted that Season 2 is going to get "very dark" compared to Season 1. Marquand added that he was personally "amazed Disney greenlit" what the production staff had in mind for Season 2, especially since "a lot of people die" throughout its overarching story. While the fact that the series will continue growing darker in tone didn't come as any major surprise, Marquand was the first cast member from X-Men '97 to confirm that Season 2 will feature multiple character deaths.

X-Men '97 is currently available for streaming on Disney+. Season 2 is expected to arrive in 2026.
