Loki writer and creator Michael Waldron opens up about his contributions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe's next big crossover film.
Speaking to The Wrap, Waldron explained how early on in the process he was involved in the development of Avengers: Doomsday, noting, "I was writing the movie after that but there wasn't a filmmaker attached yet, I was just involved in all those conversations. When that movie went away, I was working on what would become Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars for a time, and then they brought in the Russos and Steve McFeely."
Waldron, who wrote for multiple hit MCU feature films, including Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love and Thunder, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps following the overwhelming success of Loki, which he created, wrote, and executive produced, went on to explain where he stepped back in on Avengers: Doomsday once the plans for the film were fleshed out. "As those guys got in and wrapped their hands around what these movies were going to be, and [then] there was an opportunity for me to come back in and get to know Joe and Anthony and Steve and really just help however I could. That’s what I'm trying to do is just support them."
Avengers: Doomsday will mark not just the next big crossover in the MCU, but also the debut of one of the wider franchise's most hotly anticipated characters — Doctor Doom. Portrayed by former Tony Stark/Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr., fans got their first glimpse of the MCU's Doctor Doom during a post-credits sequence in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. In the sequence, Doctor Doom is seen looming over the young Franklin Richards, the latter of whom is expected to play a key role in Avengers: Doomsday when the film arrives in theaters next year.
What Can Fans Expect from Avengers: Doomsday When It Arrives in Theaters?

Avengers: Doomsday will be the biggest MCU film of all time once it arrives in theaters, and by a particularly wide margin. This is largely thanks to the fact that Avengers: Doomsday will bring together multiple universes worth of characters as their worlds collide both figuratively and literally as a result of Multiversal incursions. Apart from longtime MCU mainstays such as Chris Hemworth's Thor and Letitia Wright's Shuri, Avengers: Doomsday will see the members of the casts of Fox's X-Men films and that of The Fantastic Four: First Steps step into the MCU proper for the very first time. Regarding the circumstances for this, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige previously stated, "Only speaking to the [movie] we're working on now, shooting now, that is — for people who know the comics and know the word incursions, those are universes coming together."
Avengers: Doomsday is currently slated to arrive in theaters on Dec. 18, 2026.
