Disney is officially bringing one of the most underrated horror comics of all time to life on the small screen.

Per Deadline, Disney+ is now developing a streaming series based on the best-selling Afterlife With Archie comic book series. The Afterlife With Archie series has received a script-to-series order, ensuring that fans will get to see more than just a pilot should the project make it through the production stage. The series is being written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who also wrote the original comic book series, as well as the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina comic book series, not to mention serving as both the creator of the Netflix series of the same name after creating and showrunning The CW's Riverdale.

Aguirre-Sacasa will be teaming back up with Berlanti Productions' Greg Berlanti for Afterlife with Archie. This comes as no surprise considering their past collaborations on Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, while also giving fans high hopes for what Afterlife with Archie will look like when it arrives. Aguirre-Sacasa will also executive produce Afterlife with Archie alongside Jimmy Gibbons via the former's Muckle Man Productions, with Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman executive producing for Berlanti Productions and Jon Goldwater executive producing for Archie Comics Studios.

The original Afterlife with Archie comic book series by Aguirre-Sacasa and artist Francesco Francavilla ran for ten issues beginning in October 2013. The idea was born from a zombie-themed variant cover for an issue of Life with Archie, which opened the doors to the concept of a post-apocalyptic Riverdale. The series was a historical occasion for Archie Comics' as both its first direct market comic book release and the beginning of the Archie Horror imprint, which would come to include Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Jughead: The Hunger, Vampironica, and Blossoms 666.

Apart from earning rave reviews and paving the way for a whole new kind of Archie Comics experience, the original Afterlife with Archie helped do the very same for the likes of both The CW's Riverdale and Netflix's Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. While the former offered a decidedly sprawling, often near-incoherent soap opera for audiences to follow along with, the latter offered a more tightly woven narrative told across just 36 episodes across two seasons compared to Riverdale's staggering 137-episode, seven-season run on television. Riverdale also enjoyed a short-lived Katy Keene spinoff series starring Lucy Hale as the titular teen fashion designer alongside Ashleigh Murray's Josie McCoy (of Josie and the Pussycats fame).

Afterlife With Archie does not have a release date at this time.
