Hailee Steinfeld Reveals the One Word She Thinks She's Said The Most While Working On the Spider-Verse Movies

Spider-Verse fans will have one thing to look forward to when the animated threequel comes out. Hailee Steinfeld just confirmed she's mentioned Miles' name in the films so often that they might have an archive of sound bites for that.

Steinfeld may have just teased how Gwen feels about Miles in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. Speaking with Variety, the actor said that there's a one-word line in the trilogy she recorded too much. "I wonder sometimes if anything ever gets scrapped, because I've said the word 'Miles' in so many different ways and tones — they probably have a whole library," she quipped. That's an incentive for fans to count all the mentions when the movie comes out.

Gwen and Miles' romantic tension is palpable in the Spider-Verse films. She's yet to say outright how she feels for Miles, but Gwen's actions speak volumes. The biggest tell is a key moment in Across the Spider-Verse, when Miles becomes Gwen's confidant. There's plenty of evidence suggesting their mutual affection, but Gwen and Miles' pasts deeply complicate that. Both have disrupted their canon events, and they've yet to experience the consequences.

One scene in Across the Spider-Verse hinted at why Gwen is guarded around Miles: she knew that in all the universes, all her variants fall for Spider-Man, but it always ends tragically for them. Gwen's own history with Peter Parker (in her universe) proves that. Fans are still rooting for Miles and Gwen, and Steinfeld offers a glimmer of hope that the pair can still work out. "The process is constantly changing," she asserted. "You never get the full script at the top. It evolves. And that makes it so crazy and fun to be a part of."

Steinfeld's comment is consistent with her experience in the first two films; both scripts were also handed to her in parts. "I was never given a script in its entirety," she told The Hollywood Reporter in 2023. "I felt this way about the first film, but seeing [Across the Spider-Verse] just a few weeks ago was like reading the script for the first time. I've always loved this character, but I love her so much more in this film from what we learn about her."

The actor also revealed one reason why Across the Spider-Verse was delayed. "If there's one thing I did not know before doing this project, it was the length of time in which it takes to complete it," she said. "You will be somewhere random, and the schedules with other actors might not align to be in the same room for a scene like you'd hoped." When asked how Beyond the Spider-Verse is progressing, Steinfeld confirmed that production is still in full swing. "We're into it," she said.
