Patrik Walker is an Emmy Award–winning writer who covers all things Comics & Superheroes. His work can also be found at the Dallas Cowboys, The Sporting News, and CBS Sports, among other outlets. One of the most respected names in his field, he is also a diehard enthusiast of all things comics, anime, gaming and movies — thriving in spaces where discussions involving those or similar topics reign supreme.
Hold on to your hats and knuckle up, because Superman isn’t kidding around for the DC KO epic, and, apparently, he feels as if enough is enough. That means it’s time to break out a warhead DC Comics has kept under wraps for roughly 30 years, now re-emerging in DC KO #1, last seen in the world of comics during an era when gasoline cost a little more than a dollar a gallon and the Dallas Cowboys were reigning as one of the supreme teams in the NFL — again, a very long time ago.
A very noticeable ...sied ...eye to Darkseid and his nefarious plot to form a new Apokolips, It's time to get reacquainted with none other than the Dawnsday Knuckles, a weapon that is surely set to level the playing field for Supes in the DC KO tournament, and not a moment too soon as the Son of El fights to prove he's not going down without pulling out all the stops; and particularly when it comes to trying to take down all comers in the tourney ranks.
Anyone rightfully enamored with the Absolute Universe can thank DC All-In Special of 2024 for leading the fandom right to the front door of DC KO, written by Joshua Williamson and Scott Snyder with impeccable artistry from Xermánico, Javi Fernández, Alejandro Sánchez (colorist) and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou (letterer), and any anime fans in the crowd will have a ton of enjoyment in viewing this as DC's version of Dragon Ball's Tournament of Power construct.
The premise is very nearly the same: several of the most powerful beings in existence coming together in tournament fashion to determine, once and for all, who is the undeniable supreme of the universe. But, unlike Dragon Ball, expect the unexpected as it relates to just how dark things might and likely will get when it comes to DC characters doing whatever it takes to put down the opponent. And readers of the Absolute universe know this to be true.
What Exactly ARE the Dawnsday Knuckles?

Well, first things first: don't let Lois Lane hear anyone call them that, because she never did rubber stamp that label with Kal presented it to her after completing the taxing work of forging them.
That little housekeeping note aside, after suffering a defeat, and death, at the hands of one of his most powerful enemies, Doomsday, Superman wisely felt it prudent to alter his strategy, taking a page right out of the book of what is arguably his most genetically adaptable foe — traveling to desolate universes to collect as many yellow suns as he could get his hands on to imbue the Dawnsday Knuckles with some serious intergalactic punch.
In DC KO, each combatant is permitted a weapon of their choice, and given the fact that the Dawnsday Knuckles make an already wildly strong and fast Superman that much more so, in both categories, it should be a sight to behold once he starts throwing hands against the likes of whomever he faces — powering up to try and find a way to be the last fighter standing.
