Two of the most successful modern horror franchises, Smile, and A Quiet Place, have both released sequels, and now they are getting ready to expand into the world of comic books, as well, as IDW will be launching new series set in each of those films' respective universes to IDW's "IDW Dark" comic book imprint.
IDW has also announced two other new horror comic books to join its Smile and A Quiet Place spinoff series, which will all be debuting in 2026.
How does IDW plan to expand the world of Smile and a Quiet Place?
The Smile series, Smile: For The Camera, will come from writer Hannah Rose May (Rogues’ Gallery, The Exorcism at 1600 Penn) and artist Miriana Puglia (Red Sonja, Gargoyles), and it will be set in the early 2000s in the world of fashion modeling. May was interviewed by EW for the announcement of these comics, and she explained, ""Like how Smile 2 took us inside the world of a present day pop star, our series throws it back to the early 2000s and drops the Entity right into the ruthless world of the modeling industry."
The Quiet Place series, A Quiet Place: Storm Warning, will take the Quiet Place franchise beyond New York state to see how the alien invasion took place in Iowa. The series will be written by Phil Hester (Gotham City: Year One, Swamp Thing), who will also be doing layouts for artist Ryan Kelly (Lucifer, Stranger Things).
Hester told EW, “As a franchise, I think A Quiet Place stands out for two reasons. Each movie is a relentless torrent of suspenseful action, but with a genuinely moving drama at its core. Secondly, it's an innovative formal exercise in visual storytelling without dialogue. With A Quiet Place: Storm Warning, I feel Ryan Kelly and I have replicated those qualities, but in an entirely different medium."
What other horror titles does IDW have planned for IDW Dark in the new year?
IDW's two other horror comic book titles are original concepts. The first, The Exorcism at Buckingham Palace, is a sequel to the recent IDW series, The Exorcism at 1600 Penn. Hannah Rose May, the writer of that series, will return for the sequel, with artist Kelsey Ramsay (Godzilla: Heist, Dark Spaces: Good Deeds). May told EW, "I’ve been truly humbled by the response to The Exorcism at 1600 Penn. Returning to this world with the team at IDW Dark has been an absolute thrill. The Exorcism at Buckingham Palace expands the universe with a brand-new setting, cast, and mythology. It’s a fresh entry point for new readers, while rewarding the fans who’ve been with us since the beginning. I'm delighted to have Kelsey Ramsay on board for art and we can’t wait to welcome everyone into the next chilling chapter of The Exorcism at universe."
Finally, IDW is launching an original series, Operation: Iron Coffin, from Kenny Porter (Superboy: The Man of Tomorrow, Batman: Urban Legends) and artist Tyrell Cannon (Fantastic Four Fanfare, The Schlub), about Dracula fighting Nazis during World War II.
Smile: For The Camera is due out in February, A Quiet Place: Storm Warning and The Exorcism at Buckingham Palace are both due out in March, and Operation: Iron Coffin is due out in July
